Health Screening and Surveillance
Health screening is concerned with establishing an individual’s health status before they become involved in a particular task or are exposed to a specific hazard.

Examples include:
- eyesight testing
- night workers health assessments
- LGV drivers
- Mobile plant drivers (forklift truck, cherry pickers)
- Pre-employment assessment
- Business travellers
- Working at heights or in confined spaces
- HAVs (hand arm vibration syndrome)
Health surveillance is proactive monitoring of employees’ health to detect signs or symptoms of work related ill health.
Examples include:
- lung function testing for individuals exposed to fumes, dusts or gases
- skin inspections for the early detection of dermatitis for individuals exposed to materials like solvents or resins
- medical surveillance undertaken by a doctor where individuals are exposed to lead, asbestos, ionising radiation or certain chemicals.
- hearing tests for individuals exposed to noise levels above the exposure action levels
- biological monitoring for individuals exposed to substances such as lead, blood, urine or breath samples
